I’ve been really grouchy lately and everyone complains that I’m always negative! I can’t help it! It’s hard to feel like I’m enjoying things when I can see how I don’t feel like I fit in and I see how things are going wrong and can’t see the point of stuff. My friend says that I’m depressed. Can depression be fixed?


It sounds really frustrating to be feeling so grouchy - it takes a lot of energy and makes people stay away or criticise you! Sometimes the way we think can have a big impact on how we behave. We can fall into bad thinking habits without even knowing that they are bad for us!


  • we imagine that things are worse than they are, that is we catastrophise

  • we predict that things will turn out badly

  • we only notice the negative things that happen and we minimise or don’t notice what is going well

  • we overestimate the likelihood that a bad thing will happen

  • we think in extremes…like it’s either black or white without any possibility that it might be grey

  • we make generalised judgements like “this always happens” or “that never happens”

  • we think that we can read another person’s mind and we assume that their thoughts about us are always negative.

Depression has patterns it tends to follow, like:

  • making you think the unhelpful thinking above
  • telling you to be alone and not join in
  • promising that you won’t fit in or won’t have fun and that you can’t find the energy to do it anyway.

But depression has more trouble hanging around if you don’t obey its rules. Sometimes one of the hardest things is to get help. It's great that you've asked your question here. You can also get help by talking to someone about how you feel, either face-to-face or on the phone. You could tell an adult you trust, such as a teacher, school counsellor or a family member. They can help you by listening, but also by talking about strategies you can use so that you can start to feel better.
